About Me

I am a travel writer and publisher and am one of co-founders of the Rough Guide series of travel guides. I now work as a publishing consultant and freelance writer and am currently writing a guidebook to Norfolk and Suffolk. I am married with two children and divide my time between London and Norfolk , where we have a cottage in the riverside village of Horning.

People don't realise what an incredibly historic part of Britain Norfolk is. Five hundred years ago Norwich was the second largest city in the country and East Anglia perhaps its richest region, and everywhere there are reminders of this - Norfolk and Suffolk have a denser concentration of medieval churches than anywhere in the world, and both. Both counties also have a wide diversity of landscapes for a relatively small area, from the wetland areas of the Broads, to the forests and heathlands of the Brecks - officially Britain's driest region.

I love the Broads area most of all - it's a truly unique landscape, perfect for sailing, canoeing and walking - but the seaside areas of both counties are well worth discovering too, with endless stretches of sand and dunes that are home to great wildlife - there are a number of nature reserves that are home to a variety of birds and you can often see seals along the North and East Norfolk coast There is a mixture of resorts, from well-heeled towns like Aldeburgh and Southwold to traditional places like Cromer and Sheringham, and both counties are great places to eat and drink, with superb local produce that is being exploited in an increasing number of excellent and sometimes adventurous local hotels and restaurants.
