I am a Dutchman of 50 years and moved to Italy in 2007/2008 with my husband. I would like to help you on planning your trip in (the southern part of) Lombardy, including Milan.
We started a new life here, operating a B&B Vacation Rental from 2009. As the Oltrepo Pavese area is not very used to tourists,we still spend time preparing touristic information for our guests about places to visit - we describe walks and develop our own tours.
The Oltrepo Pavese is the wine region of Lombardy, situated in the south, 70km from Milan. The landscape consists of hills, which gradually become moutains as you reach the Ligurian Alps and Apenines in the South.
A large part is cultivated as vineyards, but there are also forests, meadows and national parks. The area is scattered with historic little cities like Varzi and Zavatarello and castles or the remains of castles.
The area is ideal for walking, cycling and for leisurely discovery. All sights are small scale but genuinely Italian and traditional. The same holds for the food and the wine, simple but excellent and very much value for money. In order to get to know the area in a week's stay (e.g.) prior information as provided by a local would be quite indispensable.
Some unique local travel experiences I can help you plan are:
- Sampling traditional wine at a a local 'Cantine' in the largest wine-producing region of Lombardy
- Exploring medieval castles and villages on your own tour
- Cycling routes through the forests of Oltrepo Pavese
- Local Italian cookery classes at a traditional restaurant
- Hiking and walking trails through the beautiful rural areas
As Milan and other cities in Lombardy are at short distance (Pavia, Cremona) I might very well help you out on these as well: what to see, where and when! I recently published a travel guide on Milan and surroundings for iPhone/iPod/iPad, called Marvelous Milan & More, via Sutro Media.
Ask me about these local experiences and anything else about my area, I'd love to help you plan your perfect trip, locally!
