Introducing Nicky - your Friend at the other End!

About Me

I've been living in Bolivia for the past three years, in which time I've absolutely fallen in love with this beautiful country's people, cultures and natural landscapes. I work in a local environmental consultancy and I'm also very active outside work: I've founded a climate change activism group here, I sing in a chamber choir, I'm learning basic Aymara and when I get time I go to tango classes and do yoga as well as regular trips to concerts, theatre etc. And of course I love to travel at every opportunity: I've travelled in seven of Bolivia's nine regions, although my most extensive experience is in the La Paz region where I live, as I often go away here for weekends. The La Paz region is perhaps the most fascinating of Bolivia, given that it covers everything from the Altiplano (flat highlands of Bolivia at 4000m altitude), the Andean mountains, the lush valleys that drop down from the mountains and finally the jungle.

Thanks to all these activities, I am very involved in the cultural scene in the city of La Paz and can offer advice about all sorts of activities and things to do, and I also have plenty of experience and advice to share about travelling in surrounding areas and further afield. When I travel, I'm most interested in getting to know local (especially indigenous) cultures, seeing the beautiful landscapes, spending time surrounded by nature and doing activities such as walking, trekking, mountain climbing and biking. These are the types of things I can offer most advice on but also if you have other interests then I have plenty of contacts and friends who I am happy to ask for extra info from.

It's also worth mentioning that I arrived to Bolivia as a backpacker, as part of a trip around Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Bolivia and Peru, so I can advise about travel in Bolivia in the context of a longer trip and from the perspective of an experienced backpacker. Having seen Bolivia from both sides (tourist and local resident) I have a good understanding of local issues and politics and am committed to promoting sustainable development and tourism, taking into account the importance of respecting traditional cultures and the environment.

Considering all of the above, I absolutely love sharing my passion for Bolivia with others and giving advice about travel, especially things to do, places to go and ways of travelling which allow you to see "true Bolivia" and go far beyond the typical "gringo trail" experience.
