I consider myself equal parts California girl and New York, and all parts wanderer. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and moved to New York to pursue my MA in English at NYU.
It's been four years, and I've stayed put. I love New York for its vibrancy, its history and its creative energy. I love that no matter what I'm in the mood for I can find it here: On any given day or night I can engage in deep or stimulating conversation with friends (or strangers), dig into some great locally harvested food, attend a literary reading or dance the night away at a salsa club. And, depending on the day or night, I can likely be found doing one or a few of those things.
Work-wise, I'm a travel writer, tutor and director of Lit Crawl, New York's ultra-cool literary pub crawl that came out of San Francisco's LITQUAKE literary festival. But when not tutoring, traveling or writing/reading, I adore seeking out New York's secrets and then sharing them, which is why I'm so thrilled to be a Tripbod.
New York is one of the most-visited cities in the world, and has various iconic attractions. But beyond the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty are the small art galleries, the tiny locavore restaurants, the adorable one-room shops with the best accessories... This is my New York: The New York of secrets, of artistic energy, of local businesses and community collaboration. Big as New York is, when you do it right, it has the feel of a small town, where everyone is connected and everyone supports each other.
It's also a city of ghosts, of elaborate and fascinating history, in, around, and even on its buildings, a city where, on every corner there is a story to be told. And I love seeking out the New York that is underneath, left over from its long and storied history.
