I settled in Bariloche with my Argentine partner in 2008, after giving up a career in commercial management back in the UK.
In one of several career breaks, I first passed through Bariloche in 2003, and it quickly became my preferred base as I set about hitching and trekking my way across Patagonia.
I now teach English and manage a small holiday lets business, and get a lot of pleasure out of making sure travelers get the most out of their visit to Patagonia.
Not being much of a city-lover, i never get tired of living down here on the edge of the Andes. The air is clear and dry, the seasonal changes are very marked, and each season has its own unique charm.
For fresh-air addicts like myself there is always plenty to do year-round, whether it's rafting, horse-riding, mountain biking or kayaking, or just heading out for a walk.
There are some terrific walking trails here, from gentle strolls to more challenging treks that take you up into the Nahuel Huapi national park. Once you get up above the tree-line you'll find granite towers, remote tarns, and jagged peaks that resemble gothic cathederals, all accessible via a chain of mountain refuges. Wherever you go, you are never very far from a panoramic lake view.
Whenever we go out for a walk I usually take my binoculars with me. I'm a keen bird-watcher, the highlights being the enormous condors, which ride on the thermals and never seem to flap their wings, the kingfishers, and three species of woodpecker, including the endemic Magellanic woodpecker.
In the winter we go skiing (in Cerro Catedral, the biggest ski centre in the southern hemisphere), and in the summer, when temperatures often reach 30 degrees, we'll head to one of the many unspoilt lake-side beaches and cool off in the lake.
